The relative insignificance of human existence

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeIVGx7wpNw&feature=youtu.be

落葉歸根。

"The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made of the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff."
-- Carl Sagan,

In a billion years' time, our sun will explode and all that we have been, all that we have done; evidence of human civilisation, our existence, will have been for naught.

But does that matter?
Do we have to leave behind a legacy?

Such a selfish reason.
To have need and want for signs of our existence to remain.

The Chinese have an idiom for it, "落葉歸根".
Fallen leaves return to their roots.

Leaves decompose and provide nourishment for the tree in the coming months.
Endless cycles of life and death.

One day, we too will return to our roots.
Won't we?

Emails & Invitations

So assuming those emails sent out and that you've received it, I made a blog to keep all the photos I take with the new lens on.

I suppose this medium is also perfect for organising my otherwise incoherent thoughts.
And for collecting all the things I come across.
What I'm trying to say is that I wanted to keep things somewhere.

All that aside,
I love love love the 50mm lens :D:D
Thank youu <3

Morning sky

Terrified because there's a dirty spot on my lens.
Absolutely terrified that I'll damage my lens in the process of cleaning.

That said,
T'was a beautiful day.

One memory led to the next.

My mum and I both share a theory that the full moon is the biggest and most beautiful in May.

Revelation of Favourites

It's not that I don't have favourites.
I just haven't found them.

My favourite composer is Chopin.
That I know.

My favourite writer is currently missing.

I don't really have a favourite book (excluding fantasy series) - The Fault in Our Stars - is the closest by far. In a while.
The best in a very long while.

I don't have a favourite song - not really - because I'm in love with too many.

So it's just that I haven't found them.
Not that I don't have them.

Which reassures me, because I was starting to think I could never make a concrete enough decision. Or that I was so unsure of my persona that I couldn't place what I liked and loved most.

Autumn days

I've resigned to making a series of 'Autumn Days' posts. I wanted different titles for all my posts, but my creativity is beginning to show its limitations.

Candid, unplanned shots that I'm not entirely happy with, but I absolutely love the colours.

Now I'm starting to warm to a 'Seasons' set.

Soon to be enshrouded

All too many times, I take photos, and unless I upload them somewhere, I mostly never see them again.
There are those occasions where I go through each and every folder in my hard drive, but they're scarce.

These aren't the best, but I didn't want them to disappear, so I'm keeping them here.

The moon was absolutely stunning.

I've wanted a photo of the moon since as long as I can remember.
The 50mm lens got me close enough to it, but I still haven't perfected my technique, so the moon turned out a bright globe.

I wish I had my dslr with me the whole trip home.

Autumn days

Walked out of the Biomed library around 2pm, then for some reasons looked up. To this.

Serendipity

Spent yesterday afternoon berating myself for being careless.
Realised I forgot to upload important documents for next year's grad applications and couldn't get my camera to autofocus.

Received emails from correspondents with solutions to these problems today, thus ending my brief spell of panic.

It did mean, however, that I took photos instead with the new lens (Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II) my friends had generously purchased for my birthday. At first I couldn't bring myself to swap the lenses, as I'm still cautious about the safety of my camera (and okay, lazy too). But everything turned out for the better!

Needless to say, I am in love with this lens.

My favourite writer is still missing.

"Will be back. Wait if you can."

I scoffed internally when I beheld this sentence for the first time. Of course I can wait, I thought. I shall be here when you return.

But seven months have past.
Still no other word from you.

Now what I have left are snippets of your words.
Wait if you can. The last words reverberate through my mind. Leaving echos, trailing lightly through my mind, leaving indelible yet subtle traces as a memento of their existence.

It's been seven months.
Come back soon.

I'll be here waiting.

orange & almond

It's almost become a tradition.
Orange and almond cake to celebrate my birthday each year.

With love.

The best part about birthdays are the messages from friends and family.

If ever there were a word to express gratitude, love, happiness and so many more inexplicable feelings.

Amidst a barrage of mid semester exams...

My room should be in a more secluded location. Too many of my daily activities revolve around my bed, which isn't too ideal considering how easily you can see into my room from our front steps.

Heh.

鹽埕區

米糕

It has taken me more than ten years to finally figure out exactly where in Kaohsiung all my favourite childhood food is. I never thought to pay enough attention in my past trips. The streets were always a blur.

Conveniently, everything is located within one suburb: 鹽埕區.
